据马来西亚媒体报道，尽管全球经济不景气，但亚洲的医疗旅游业却没受到冲击，反而日益蓬勃，成为该区域增长最快的新兴行业。
由于收费相对低廉、不必等候、医疗技术顶尖、医生受过良好的专业训练，从印度、韩国到新加坡等亚洲国家的医院，现在每年所受理的外国病人超过100万人。
业内专家预测，亚洲医疗旅游业每年的增长速率将达到15%-20%，新兴富裕群的出现是推动该行业迅速发展的主要原因。
医药新闻网站Medscape预计，亚洲医疗旅游业的总收入到了2012年将高达44亿美元。亚洲医院的外国病人主要来自美国。由于美国的医疗费用十分昂贵，许多人为了减少开支而选择到亚洲接受治疗，这些人一般可省下40%-50%的医药费。
不过，近年来这个行业出现了一个新类型的病人;这些人为了“纠正”形象而不惜花大钱。韩国BK东洋整容医院的金炳建医生则表示，他的病人年龄层非常广，有小至6岁的来割双眼皮，也有70岁的来拉脸皮;手术的平均收费介于5000-1万美元不等，医疗旅游业将成为推动韩国经济发展的引擎之一。
据韩国保健产业振兴院的统计，去韩国接受医疗手术的外国客户逐年大幅增长，2008年有2.7万人，2009年有6万人，到了2010年有将近 8.2万人，总收入达到7亿美元。韩国保健产业振兴院预测，到了明年，这类旅客将增加至20万人。韩国官方则预测，到了2020年，每年将迎来100万名医疗旅客。
韩国的医疗旅游业虽然发展迅速，可是目前仍落后于其他亚洲国家如泰国、新加坡、印度、马来西亚，甚至菲律宾。为了吸引外国人，这些国家都有自己独特的行销策略和医疗专业领域。
例如，泰国和印度医院的专长就包括骨科和心脏手术。泰国的策略是让旅客前来接受医疗服务的同时享受低费旅行。根据美国的调查，美国旅客觉得在全球城市中，泰国最物有所值。
而印度政府说，当地的医疗服务收费比其他东南亚国家低廉。此外，印度医生都会说英语，这是让外国病人觉得舒服自在的主要因素。由于前去求医的旅客日益增加，印度政府还为这些特殊旅客发出特别签证。
新加坡则定位为医疗保健业的“优质中心”，客户包括邻国显贵、亚洲和中东的政治人物及艺人。新加坡希望到了明年，每年接待医疗旅客能够突破100万人。菲律宾也以低廉的收费为竞争优势，希望入境的医疗旅客到2015年能突破100万人，带来至少10亿美元的收入。
至于马来西亚，该国去年吸引了将近40万名医疗游客。它的目标是要在2020年之前把这个数字增加至190万人，办法主要是确保收费比新加坡低。据马来西亚一名卫生部官员说，当地的医疗收费比邻国新加坡便宜30%。
然而，亚洲医疗旅游业蓬勃发展引起了一些关注，包括专科医生会大量被更高的报酬和更好的科技吸收到私人机构去。
世界卫生组织去年底发表的一份报告书就指出，医疗旅游业的迅速发展，对“公共卫生造成相当大的影响”。该报告说，由于外国病人大量涌入，医疗服务的需求和价格将上升。此外，一些国家的医疗服务还可能为了满足这些外国人而忽略了当地人民的需要。
